school named sandy hook. one photograph to share with you as crews rush to the scene. let me bring in my colleague jason carroll who has been working his sources. what do we know? >> disturbing story. the shooting happening at sandy hook elementary school on dickerson drive. this is coming to us from one of our affiliates. police are reporting a number of injuries. the nature of the injuries at this point are unclear. we're going to be checking that throughout the morning. state police sources say that one person is dead. earlier reports of a second shooter. that has not been confirmed at this point. a few more reports, apparently the shooting was reported shortly after 9:40 a.m. this morning. police reported that a shooter was in the -- apparently in the main office. >> which is hard to tell with this image that we're looking at because that's sort of bird's-eye view of the school layout doesn't show where that is. we should mention that one of the tv stations that has been reporting on this was told by a witness that she saw two children, one with a bloody face and the other with what

teaching first grade at sandy hook elementary, and she loved every minute of it. her mom says vicky loved her students more than life. always referring to them as her kids instead of her students. she wanted to be known as a good teacher but as a fun teacher. her students loved her. many said she was their favorite teacher. on friday, vicky died a hero. after hearing gunshots she herded her kids into the closet and shielded them from the gunman. >> she talked about them with such fondness and caring and i have no doubt in my mind she did everything she could to protect everyone of them. >> she was passionate about her family and was known as queen victoria as home. the ring leader who organized christmas every year. her family said she loved the beach, loved flamingos and the new york yankees. in her obituary they write she was an amazing daughter, cousin, teacher and friend, and died protecting her kids. we couldn't be prouder of our hero. her dog roxy waits every day for her to come home from school. we will remember them. paul simon performed at her funeral and sang the song, "the soun

wrestling with so much heartbreak, all of the newtown schools except for sandy hook elementary will reopen. grief and the fears of returning students an additional concern. police officers will be at every single school and today the town will lay to rest, the grandmother of charlotte bacon says her 6-year-old granddaughter was a bundle of energy who loved dresses and a second, jessica rekos, loved horses, she wrote her own horse stories, excited about a pair of cowgirl boots she was expecting to get for christmas. now to get the latest on the school's reopening this morning, sara endo is here in the heart of newtown with more. >> reporter: they're starting to see a lot of school buses rolling by and in about an hour or two classes will be in session. they all may be anxious about school returning back to normalcy but this could be the first step to healing. step towards normalcy, for newton kids that means go back to school. >> we're a little bit worried because we know what we thought was a secure school had this happen to them. >> reporter: facing fear may be the first step to overcome

but the school in question, no. the kids from sandy hook elementary are not going back to class today. they won't be going back to class for a while. they will go back to a school in a neighboring town in monroe. it is being readied for those children and they will return. as others have returned on a two-hour delay today. all of this as this town buries yet another of its dead. a 6-year-old girl, jessica rekos. her family will lay her to rest today. and just so you know a little bit more about that little child. she loved horses. she wanted a cowboy hat and cowboy boots for christmas. her parents spoke with abc news about their little angel. >> she was a ball of fire. she ruled the roost. >> our little ceo we called her. she was the boss. >> reporter: as they remember their child there are so many funerals that have yet to take place in this town, not only for the children but the teachers, as well. at this time, though, there is the business of getting these children back to some kind of normalcy and for so many people that means school. sandra endo has been covering that angle. give me a bit

in newtown, connecticut. it all started when a gunman entered through the doors of sandy hook elementary school. we are awaiting a press conference, you're looking at that right now. it has not begun, but i do want to give those of you who have joined us a sense of what happened. tom foreman walks us through what happened yesterday morning minute by minute. >> this is what we know at this point about the timeline of the shooting reported by law enforcement officials and witnesses and the layout of the school as best we can piece it all together. 9:30 in the morning, classes had been underway for a half hour. more than 600 students and approximately 50 faculty members inside the building. in addition to that there's a meeting just convened by some of the school officials including the principal in a room somewhere right up here, about seven of them all gathered in one room. about 9:40, ten minutes later, as beck we can make it out, that's when the gunman appears to have entered the building. how? we don't know. they had a new security system right up here that might have kept him out, not

through on, was installing this new security system at this elementary school at sandy hook elementary school so that, if there were to be a stranger or visitor to come to the school after the school doors closed at 9:30 in the morning, they would have to ring the bell. security very important for dawn hochsprung. friday morning, she was in a meeting, according to a parent, with the school psychologist, and they heard the pop, pop, pop, and immediately sprang into action. and lunged for the shooter, and that is when she passed away. one report, as she was lunging for this young man, there was a teacher down the hallway, who she yelled at, get in the classroom, close the door, lock the door from the inside, all of this from this principal lunging at the shooter. she was married. she had two daughters, three stepdaughters. let me read you this one tweet, wolf. this was from her 30-year-old daughter, christine. . welcome back to cnn's continuing coverage of the tragedy at sandy hook, elementary. we are here in newtown, connecticut. heading towards the bottom of the hour. i'm kate bolduan and john berman will be back to join me in a couple of minutes. let's catch you up on what we know this sunday. president obama will head to newtown, connecticut, where he will meet with the families of the victims. the president will also speak at a vigil, an interfaith vigil tonight. many people looking forward to hearing his words. we also know 12 of the victims were boys and 8 were girls. the medical examiner released the names of all of the victims yesterday. all of the children were either 6 or 7 years old. while 6 of them have the victi adults, all were women working at the school. united way set up a fund to collect donations for victims' families and the community as a whole. it's called the sandy hook school support fund. all donations will go directly to those affected. many ways to impact your world today. >>> we still don't know much, though, about the shooter, adam lanza. so many questions and very f

hockey. students in newtown, they are back in school today. but to be clear, not the students of sandy hook elementary school. students at other schools, they are seeing more police, more counselors on hand, just being in town the last couple of days there are a lot of police officers just sitting in the driveways of a lot of the schools here, clearly security being beefed up in this town right now. teachers union says classes will discuss the shooting in age appropriate manner. it is not clear yet, though, when sandy hook elementary school will resume class. but when they do, it will certainly be at a different school in the neighboring town of monroe. and i just got back from newtown this morning, and during dinner time last night, i was invited to spend some time with these two volunteer firefighters, they're with newtown hook and ladder and they went into emergency mode, of course, early last friday morning. they are rob mana and ray corbo. they served their community now for more than 20 years each. but the day they got that call, they say it was like nothing they had ever seen be

that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break. there were also funerals today for two more 6 year olds. jessica rekos and james mattioli. we'll have more on those memorials later on in our show. first, we wanted to bring you the very latest that we know about the investigation. our national correspondent susan candiotti has new details. she is outside the lanza home tonight. susan, what can you tell us, the very latest that you have been able to figure out about why this happened? >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, if the shooter in this case was trying to erase his digital footprint, he may have succeeded. because investigators are telling us that that smashed computer that you referred to was so badly damaged, presumably by the shooter himself, that they are having a hard time retrieving data from the hard drive. but they're not giving up. they're still working on it because they want to try to examine it for any e-mails he might have sent, for any writings he left behind, to learn about any websites that he

at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police are not saying at this point if he killed himself. police did say that they did not discharge any of their weapons and yet he was dead on the scene. law enforcement sources also telling cnn that the shooter in this horrible tragedy was dressed in "black battle fatigues and a military vest." the principal of

to school today of course with the exception of sandy hook elementary. the students of sandy hook will go back to school after the holidays in a different building some eight miles away, with 20 bright young faces missing from the halls and classrooms. everything is different now. the children of this town are facing a new reality, doing things they never should have to do at this young age. like writing good-bye letters to their friends. we told you last night about 6-year-old jack pinto who was buried yesterday. at the funeral, a note from his friend john reads, jack, you are my best friend. we had fun together. i will miss you. i will talk to you in my prayers. i love you, jack. love, john." there were two more funerals for two more 6-year-old children. jessica rekos and james mattioli were laid to rest today. we will remember them and tonight we honor them. our hearts and thoughts are with their families and their friends. and we wish peace and strength for all the people whose lives jessica and james touched in just six short years. james mattioli was known as jay. just 6 years old,

with six pink candles. a first grader at sandy hook elementary. she loved to draw, wanted to be an artist when she grew up. she often would turn parts of her house into a mini-art studio, by taping rows of her drawings to the wall. her parents say allison sometimes surprised her parents with random acts of kindness to strangers, once offering her own snacks to fellow passengers on the plane. alison loved to laugh, was developing her own sense of humor. she would sometimes make her parents cry with laughter. they write, allison made the world a better place for six far too short years and we now have to figure out how to move on without her. she was a sweet, creative, funny, intelligent little girl who had an amazing life ahead of her. our world is a lot darker now that she's gone. dawn hochsprung was known as a tough educator who always found time to smile. she was 47 years old and principal of sandy hook elementary school. her pride in her school was obvious to anyone who knew her. friends and colleagues alike say she had a positive energy and a strong work ethic. she constantly tweeted
